Corry joined West Middlesex as the only two District 10 teams, regardless of classification, to average at least 27 points per game and still miss out on the postseason in 2008. Two all-region picks including, first team quarterback and region player of the year, Scott Frisina return in hopes of improving on that number and sending the Beavers to the playoffs for the second time in four years. Frisina, a third-year starter, led the team in passing (2007 yards, 25 touchdowns) and rushing (608 yards, seven touchdowns) last year and enters his senior year needing less than 2,000 passing yards to eclipse 5,000 for his career. Senior second team all-region wide receiver Craig Marti led the team in all receiving stats last year (36 catches, 674 yards, nine touchdowns), while junior Cory Owens (25 catches, 294 yards, four touchdowns) is another experienced starter and senior Braidy Westfall replaces first team all-region choice Nicholas Upperman (24 catches, 351, seven touchdowns) as the third starting receiver. Due to an injury, Westfall didn’t play much last year, but is a very good athlete and had a strong offseason, according to DeLattre. Senior Adam Zimmerman finished second on the team in rushing (149 yards) in 2008 and is the fullback, with Mitchell Anderson (18 catches, 298 yards, two touchdowns), also a senior, the tailback, and junior Justin Miller, a converted receiver, and senior Kelsey Crawford the top backups at the two spots. Crawford is also the backup quarterback and can play receiver if needed. In senior center Brandon Miller and junior tackles Dustin Taubert (right) and Alec Gluvna (left), the Beaver offensive line returns three players that started every game in 2008, while senior Tyler Volk (right) and sophomore Dylan Swanson (left) are the new guards.

Defense was the main reason that Corry didn’t go to the postseason last year as it gave up more points per game than any other District 10 team that finished with a winning record and allowed at least 29 in both of its two region losses. With that in mind the Beavers will switch to a stack defense and eight players that had at least 15 tackles, including two second team all-region picks, will be part of the new look, although the team must replace two first team all-region performers. Brandon Miller (42 tackles, two sacks), the team’s SAM linebacker, is one of the all-region picks that returns, while Zimmerman (63 tackles, two sacks) is also back as the WILL, Justin Miller (15 tackles) is the MIKE and the outside linebackers are Crawford (44 tackles) and Anderson. Safety Owens is the other all-region selection that returns, although both of last year’s starting cornerbacks, including first team all-region honoree Michael Brown (42 tackles, four interceptions), graduated and Marti and Westfall are the new starters. On the line Taubert (31 tackles, two sacks) and Gluvna (27 tackles, two sacks) return as the defensive tackles and Swanson is the new nose tackle.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Senior David Hajec returns as the starting kicker and Richard Akers is the new punter with Marti, who returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown in a 28-27 Beaver win over Bradford last year, Owens, who also has experience being deep on both kicks and punts, and Westfall the three return men.
OVERVIEW
The Beavers main concern coming into this season is a lack of depth as the majority of their starters will have to play a lot on both sides of the ball. That said, led by Frisina, Corry has the look of a team that should challenge for a postseason berth and very possibly a region crown.

Grove City has averaged at least 21 points per game in six of the past seven seasons and, not surprisingly, all but one of those six seasons ended with the Eagles earning a trip to the playoffs. Six all-region choices, including five first teamers, from last year’s offense graduated, although sophomore quarterback Tyler Dagres (28-for-54, 411 yards passing, three touchdowns, four interceptions) is amongst the returning starters. Mason DePeal, also a sophomore, is the backup quarterback, while the Eagles must replace first team all-region running backs Dwayne Martin and Casey Shay, who combined for over 2000 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns last year. Martin was also a second team all-region choice in 2007 and in three years as a starter he rushed for 1752 yards and 23 touchdowns and added 42 receptions for 769 yards and nine scores. Senior Marty Phipps led all returning players with 188 yards rushing last year, while his younger brother Wesley Phipps, a sophomore, and senior Nick Reddiick are the other starting running backs with juniors Brady Beech and Jamarr Patterson and sophomore Eric Record all figuring to see time. Seniors Brandon Steffanus and B.J. Johnston and junior Anthony Ruffo are the top three receivers, while sophomore Chauncey Miller replaces first team all-region pick Jason Ferderber as the starting tight end and junior Travis Wanner is the backup. On the offensive line Grove City must replace two first team all-region selections and this year’s list of starters includes four seniors in tackle Lucas Pryor, guards Dan Sprando and Mike Turek and center Wes Uber and one junior in tackle Jibrin Ahmed. Senior center Ray Tuerke, guards Taylor Pokrant (junior) and Shawn Seybert (freshman) and tackles Josh Hartstine (junior) and Tony Turner (sophomore) are the top backups up front.
DEFENSE

As is the case on offense, Grove City’s defense has been consistently good for most of the past decade as last year was the seventh straight season that the team allowed fewer than 20 points per game. Also like on offense, the Eagles must replace a lot on defense as eight all-region performers, including six first team selections are no longer around and maybe with that in mind the team will switch from a 3-4 to a 3-5 and look to take more chances. Second team safety Marty Phipps is the only all-region member that returns on either side of the ball for Grove City and he is joined in the secondary by cornerbacks Depeal and Ruffo, with Beech and Johnston the backup corners and senior Joel Shaffer the backup safety. At linebacker Grove City lost three all-region members, including first team picks Shay and Nick Delligatti, and the new starting outside linebackers are Patterson and Miller with Wesley Phipps, Reddick and Sprando the inside linebackers. Defensive tackles Ahmed and Steffanus and senior nose tackle Tuerke are the three starting down linemen, with Uber, Pokrant and Turner others in the rotation.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Grove City’s special teams also lost an all-region pick as first team punter Garrett Herald graduated and Dagres and senior Jeff Hershberger will share in punting duties this year, while Hershberger will also be the team’s kicker and the top return men are Marty Phipps, Patterson, Beech and senior Leonard Howard.
OVERVIEW
Grove City finished each of the past seven seasons with a winning record and, as previously mentioned, reached the playoffs five times during that span. However, with the loss of all-region players at 15 positions, for that success to continue some new faces will have to step up and lead the way.

After averaging fewer than 12 points per game for four straight years, Meadville put up more than 20 per contest both of the past two seasons and last year was the first time in more than a decade that the Bulldogs averaged more than 23 per game. Six all-region selections, including two first team picks, graduated from last year’s offense and senior second team guard Dan Nelson is the only all-region member that returns. Although Nelson is back, the team must replace each of its other four starting offensive linemen, including all-region tackles Zack Steck (first team) and Anthony Loiacona (second team). Senior Brandon Hassett and junior J.D. Andrews are the new tackles, while senior Matt Pfeifer joins Nelson as a starting guard and center Logan Hinderliter give the line a fourth senior starter. Senior Jarrod Kilburn is back for a third year as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback, and he’s passed for 1235 yards and eight touchdowns in his time behind center, but Meadville graduated its top three rushers, all of whom were all-region picks and combined for 1806 yards and 26 touchdowns on the ground last year. Senior fullback Tyler Banks led all returning players in rushing (552 yards, seven touchdowns) and will be joined as a starter by wingbacks Dearius Goodrum (senior) and Terrance Goodrum (sophomore), who are cousins, with seniors Mike Adams (fullback) and Addison Goodrum (wingback) and freshman Artrell Foster (wingback) others that could see time in the backfield. Seniors Chris Heaney and Marcel Jones and junior Max Berkstresser are the top three split ends, with seniors Joe Keenan and Nick Kightlinger the top two tight ends.
DEFENSE

RANK

Last year was the third straight season that Meadville improved its scoring defense and also the first time in more than a decade that the team didn’t allow the opposition to average at least 20 points per game during the regular season. Each of the four all-region members from last year’s defense graduated and, as was the case on offense, the Bulldog line was hit hardest by graduation on the defensive side of the ball as the four players that must be replaced, two of whom were first team all-region picks, combined for 237 tackles and 29 sacks. Keenan led all returning linemen with 25 tackles and four sacks and is joined at defensive end by Hinderliter, with Hassett and Andrews the defensive tackles. Even with the loss of first team all-region member Devin Boyda (71 tackles), linebacker could still be the strength of the defense as inside starter Nelson (45 tackles) and outside starter Banks (32 tackles) are both back. Pfeifer joins Nelson as a starting inside linebacker with Kightlinger and Adams both options to be the other starting outside linebacker. Dearius Goodrum (45 tackles, four interceptions) moves from cornerback to safety, where he’ll replace second team all-region pick, Toney Phillips and the new corners are Foster and Terrance Goodrum.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Senior Ted Pierce returns as the kicker, Keenan is the punter and midway through the second week of camp the return jobs were open.
OVERVIEW
Meadville won as many games in the last two years as it did in the previous six and while this year’s team is much more inexperienced than last season’s, there are enough holdovers to believe the Bulldogs can contend for a second straight postseason berth.

Last year was the first time since 2000 that Warren averaged fewer than 20 points per game and while two first team all-region picks from that unit graduated, six starters do return, including junior Matt Stapleford, who made a successful transition to quarterback (1685 yards passing, 12 touchdowns), after being a second team all-region receiver in 2007. Stapleford also led the team with 237 yards rushing, adding a touchdown, last season and was the only Dragon to rush for at least 100 yards in a game (106 in a victory over Iroquois). Junior fullback T.J. Latimer gives the backfield a second returning starter, although he was actually more of a threat in the passing game (21 catches, 197 yards, three touchdowns) last year and senior Curtis DeLattre is the new halfback. At wide receiver Warren must replace two-time first team all-region choice Mitch McTavish (54 catches, 606 yards, four touchdowns last season), although senior classmates Cody Bupp (22 catches, 301 yards, one touchdown) and Travis Larsen both have starting experience. Senior Colter Johnson and junior Andrew Morrison are the top two tight ends and while first team all-region tackle Pat Zigler graduated, senior Michael Jaskolka is back as the other starting tackle and junior center Drew Johnson gives the line a second returning starter. Each of the other three spots on the line will be filled by juniors with Logan Morley joining Jaskolka as a starting tackle, Brett Ball one of the guards and either Brady Grosch or Eric Buck the other.

While Warren’s offense experienced some growing pains in its first year under Wright, the defense actually allowed exactly 12 points per game fewer than it did in 2007 and gave up less than 35 points per contest for the first time since 2003. As is the case on offense, the defense must replace two first team all-region selections (defensive back McTavish. linebacker Coti Snyder), although two second team choices are back. Drew Johnson is one of the all-region picks that returns and he’s joined at defensive end by senior Dylan Winslow, while defensive tackle Cole Cerra, also a senior, gives the line a third returning starter. Defensive tackle Jaskolka and nose tackle Morley complete the defensive line, while second team all-region pick Larsen is back as one starting outside linebacker with Morrison the other outside starter and Latimer a returning starter at middle linebacker. Even without McTavish the secondary could be a strength as cornerback Delattre and safety Stapleford are both returning starters and while Bupp didn’t start last year, he did return an interception 32 yards for a touchdown in the team’s season closing victory over Northwestern and joins Delattre as a starting cornerback this year.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Johnson was a first team all-region kicker last year, nailing six field goals, including a 47-yarder vs. East, and also returns as the team’s punter, while Larsen and Bupp have experience on returns and will handle the duties again this year.
OVERVIEW
After reaching the playoffs in both 2005 and 2006 Warren finished both of the past two years 2-8, but with 11 starters back, combined with the fact that 2008 Region 5 playoff qualifiers Grove City and Meadville both lost a lot to graduation, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see the Dragons contend for a third postseason berth in five years.

2008 was the second straight season that Franklin averaged at least 20 points per game and the team has failed to do so just once in the past eight years. However, much of last year’s offense was made up of seniors and amongst the 2009 graduates were six all-region selections. Senior left tackle Nick Turk and sophomore center Nolan Hall are returning starters, while senior Steven Myers, who started at wide receiver last year, replaces second team all-region pick Julian Wested, who passed for over 4,000 yards in his career, as the starting quarterback. Myers will also see time at running back and receiver and in those situations, sophomore Nick Billingsley will be behind center. Junior Jesse Dipietro and senior fullback Zach Murray are the starting running backs and will attempt to replace the production of fellow 2009 graduates Sean Cogswell (second team all-region last year) and Brandon Perrine who combined 3080 yards from scrimmage over the past two seasons. First team all-region wide receiver Tyler Bittner, who was a first team all-state selection in 2007 and caught 149 passes for 2086 yards and 26 touchdowns over the past three years, was another member of the class of 2009, and senior Travis Adams is the new starting split end with Mike Sadler or Jesse Worsk, both also seniors, the flanker. Junior Brandon Laing is the tight end, while the Knights must replace three all-region members, including first team tackle Dan Uber, on the offensive line. Senior guards Zac Richey and Evan Huff and junior tackle Mike Spaid look to join Turk and Hall as starters, although freshman Nick Fiorentino was pushing Spaid for the right tackle spot as training camp wore down.

Last year was the second straight season that Franklin gave up more than 22 points per game and, just like on offense, six all-region players from the 2008 defense graduated. However, second team all-region inside linebacker Myers (97 tackles, three sacks) is back, while Murray (14 tackles) is the other starting inside linebacker with Depietro (24 tackles, 3.5 sacks) and junior Jake Uhler the starting outside linebackers. Cornerback Bittner was the defenses only first team all-region selection last season and Sadler is one new starter with Worsk or possibly junior Randell Wilson the other starting cornerback, although freshmen Forrest Wested and Dalton Mathews were also pushing for time as camp wore down. Adams (63 tackles) is back as the starting safety, while all of last year’s starting defensive linemen, three of whom were second team all-region selections, graduated and senior defensive end Tyler Ream led the list of returning players with five tackles in 2008. Richey, Laing and freshman Quaid Dolan are others that could see time at end with Fiorentino, senior Stephen Hartman and sophomore Colin Bittner the top three tackles.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Brian Greenlee was a second team all-region punter both of the past two years and also earned second team all-region honors at kicker last year and Bittner replaces him at kicker, with sophomore Casey Boyer the new punter and Adams, Saddler and Myers the return men.
OVERVIEW
Franklin has finished with a winning percentage of .500 or better in seven of the past eight seasons, but with such a young team the main focus for this year is not wins and losses, but coming out and giving all they have on a weekly basis. That said, the fact that most don't seem to expect much out of the Knights this season has been a motivating factor for them to get the season started and possibly come out and surprise some people.
