Wilmington has averaged more than 30 points per game in each of the past three years and joined Strong Vincent as the only District 10 teams to score at least 20 in every one of their regular season and postseason games last year. Six players that earned some form of postseason recognition last year, including two all-state selections, must be replaced although the team does return two first team all-region picks. Senior fullback Derrick Burns, a third-year starter, is one of the all-region choices that returns and he rushed for 1487 yards and 25 touchdowns last year. Burns averaged nearly 100 yards per game (99.7) and rushed for seven touchdowns in Wilmington’s postseason run. Senior Jake DeMedal  (87 carries, 548 yards, seven touchdowns – 13 catches, 279 yards, two touchdowns) is the other returning all-region honoree, but makes the move from running back to quarterback, where he’ll replace Shane Wagner, who passed for 1514 yards and 20 touchdowns, while only being intercepted three times, and also rushing for 239 yards and four scores last year. Junior Sutton Whiting (121 carries, 933 yards, 11 touchdowns) joins Burns as a returning starter in the backfield and had his top rushing performance (104 yards) in the team’s District 10 semifinal victory over General McLane, while senior Josh Phillian replaces DeMedal as third starting running back. All-region receivers Matt Wagner (first team) and Carson Sharbaugh (second team)  and second team all-state tight end Dallas Hartman (who has continued his education and playing career at Columbia University) combined to catch 68 passes for 1158 yards and 17 touchdowns last year, but all three graduated and senior Chad Palladino is the new the split end, with converted offensive lineman Ethan Kauffman, also a senior, the the tight end. On the line Wilmington must replace two players that earned some form of postseason recognition, including first team all-state center Clint DeRosa, although Paul Welch (third year, guard) and Sean Christofferson (second year, tackle) are returning starters and are joined up front by senior classmates Joe Bloise (tackle), Brad Zaboroski (guard) and Randy Montalvo (center).

DEFENSE

Amongst 8 teams in region: 1

Amongst 17 Class AA teams in District 10: 1

Last year was the fourth straight regular season that Wilmington allowed fewer than 10 points per game during the regular season and in 2008 the Hound Hammer defense held everyone one its foes below their season scoring average. Four all-region picks from last year’s unit graduated, although two first team choices do return and inside linebacker Burns (142 tackles, two sacks, one interception), who was also a first team all-region pick in 2007 and has started since he was a freshman, added a second team all-state selection to his list of honors last year. Cornerback Whiting (54 tackles, one interception), a third-year starter, is the other returning all-region member, while DeMedal (51 tackles, four interceptions) makes the move from cornerback to replace first team all-region pick Shane Wagner, who intercepted 11 passes in three years as a starter, at safety. One of two sophomores (Anthony Derrick or Ryan Crawford) will be the other corner, while senior Ryan Martin joins Burns at inside linebacker and replaces first team all-region pick Sharbaugh (127 tackles, four sacks), who has continued his education and playing career at Youngstown State University. Palladino (78 tackles, four interceptions) is back as one starting outside linebacker, while Phillian (47 tackles, two sacks) moves from defensive end to replace second team all-region choice Matt Wagner (69 tackles, five sacks, two interceptions) as the other starter. Three-year starter DeRosa (first team), who has continued his education and playing career at Waynesburg College, and Hartman (second team) were both all-region defensive tackles and Christofferson is one new starter with Bloise or junior Jason McFarland the other, while Welch (44 tackles, five sacks) returns as one starting defensive end and Zaboroski (54 tackles) also saw significant action last year at the other.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Senior, second team all-region, kicker Bryce Wilson returns and could also be the team’s punter with sophomore Josh Tekac the other option, while Whiting, who brought back a kick for a touchdown last season, will be deep on both kick and punt returns, with DeMedal joining him on punts and Burns doing so on kicks.

OVERVIEW

Wilmington obviously lost a lot from last year’s state championship team, but the Greyhounds also return some very talented players and enter the season as the favorite to capture both a fifth straight region crown and fourth consecutive district championship and from there anything is possible.

Greenville returns seven starters, including four all-region picks, from an offense that averaged nearly 30 points per game and scored at least 26 in each of its final six. Two of the all-region picks are senior running backs R.J. Malson (first team, fullback) and Dylan Zuschlag (second team, tailback), who combined for 1975 yards and 26 touchdowns on the ground last season. Zushlag led the team with 1121 yards and surpassed the 100-yard mark five times, including a 223-yard, 4 touchdown performance, in the Trojans postseason loss to General McLane, while Malson finished the year with 854 yards rushing, including 2 100+ games, and matched Zuschlag, with 13 rushing scores, while Zuschlag also caught three TD passes. Junior Nick Weaver (27 carries, 204 yards, three touchdowns) is the backup fullback and Josh Riffe, also a junior, is the backup tailback. Each of Greenville’s other all-region selections were offensive lineman and two of the three are back in senior tackles Pat Matusz and Steve Pfaff, both of whom earned second team honors in 2008. Center Alex Palmer was the other all-region performer last year (also second team) and senior Branden Williams replaces him, with junior classmates Ryan Kuhn and Nick Stoyer the new starting guards. Senior David Holiga was the starting quarterback last year, but will begin this season alternating time behind center with junior Nico Zahniser, while senior Nate Houpt (29 catches, 319 yards, two touchdowns) returns as the starting split end with junior Dillon Sarcinella and senior Jordan Batt both starters in the team's two tight end offense.

The Trojans held five teams to no more than 10 points, including two shutouts, in 2008, but also gave up at least 31 points on four different occasions, including their postseason setback. Nine of the top 12 tacklers from last year's team are back, including three first team all-region picks. Defensive end Sarcinella (51 tackles, one sack) is one of the all-region members that returns, while defensive tackle Pfaff, who led all returning players with 78 tackles a season ago, gives the defensive line a second returning starter. Junior Ryan Kuhn replaces second team all-region pick Andy Bayer, who led the team with seven sacks, at the other defensive end spot, while Stoyer is the other starting defensive tackle and senior Eric Fisher (72 tackle, three sacks) is the nose tackle. Matusz will also see time in the rotation at defensive tackle and while the Trojans must replace second team all-region choice Taylor Malson (92 tackles), first team pick R.J. Malson (72 tackles, one interception) is back and is joined as a starter by Batt, who missed last season due to injury, but had 57 tackles as a sophomore in 2007. First team all-region selection Houpt (31 tackles, three picks) returns as one starting cornerback with senior classmate Cody Yavorsky (25 tackles, two interceptions) the other, Zahniser (43 tackles, two interceptions) the free safety and Riffe the strong safety.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Zuschlag brought back both a kick and a punt for a score last year, while Riffe and Houpt were also return men last season and will do so again this year. Junior kicker Michael Simons and senior punter Ryan Meadors are both returning starters.

OVERVIEW

Greenville has reached the playoffs each of the past three years and four of the past five, but hasn’t won a postseason game since 2001. With so much talent returning on both sides of the ball their seems to be every reason to think that the second streak could end this year and the Trojans may have as a good a shot as anybody of challenging Wilmington for both the region and district crowns.

Sharon’s offense averaged at least four touchdowns per game both of the past two years, but repeating that success won’t be easy as six players that earned some form of postseason recognition graduated, including region player of the year Todd Rearick, a three year starter who passed for 2,421 yards and 28 touchdowns last year, and second team all-state wide receiver Mike Tomko (45 catches, 840 yards, 13 touchdowns). Senior Ron Howard, who earned second team all-region all purpose back honors by accounting for 584 yards of offense (305 rushing, 279 receiving), is the new signal caller and he showed off his legs in the team’s final scrimmage against Strong Vincent with a number of nice runs, including a touchdown that went for more than 60 yards. Senior Louis Brown (21 catches, 338 yards, seven touchdowns) returns as one starting wide receiver, with senior Casey Smith and juniors Steve Bittler and Vandell Spicer other that will see time at receiver in the Tigers spread offense.  Seniors Kevin Brown, Cameron Brown, who missed the team’s first two scrimmages due to injury but could be back for the season opener against Farrell, and James Hosey all have varsity experience and junior Marc Martell is a fourth option at running back. Kevin Brown led the group in rushing last season and started the afore mentioned scrimmage against Strong Vincent. Second team all-region tight end Dustin Norcross (31 catches, 455 yards, seven touchdowns) joined Rearick and Tomko in the class of 2009 and senior London Sanders and junior Jordan Rearick, who is Todd Rearick’s younger brother, are both options to be the new starter. On the line Sharon must replace three second team all-region selections, although senior guard Nick Juranovich and junior tackles Justin Yuran and Marion Lampkins all have at least some starting experience, while seniors Ian Wingard (center) and Tim Tillman (guard) complete the list of starters.

The Tigers were 7-0, including postseason, when holding the opposition to fewer than 20 points last year, but just 3-3 when failing to do so. Four all-region choices from last year’s unit are no longer around and as is the case on offense (second team cornerback) Howard is the lone returning all-region selection and makes the move to safety. Cornerback Brown, who returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown in a Tiger victory over Carrick last season, gives the secondary another returning starter, with Bittler the other corner, Smith the rover and Spicer (cornerback) and Kevin Brown (rover) others expected to see time in the defensive backfield. Two of the all-region losses on defense came from the line, including first team defensive end Norcross and Sanders, Jordan Rearick, Martell and Tillman are all likely to see some time at end this year, with senior Tim Runyan and juniors Demond Davis-White, Travis Coonce and Nick Osmon and sophomore Zach Porterfield all in the rotation at defensive tackle. Linebacker appears to be the most experienced unit on the defense as Cameron Brown, Juranovch, Hosey and Yuran have all seen significant time and Juranovich had three sacks in the team’s playoff victory over Fairview and also had an interception return for a score in a regular season triumph over Titusville. Sophomore Joey Tomko, Mike Tomko’s younger brother, is another player that could see time at linebacker and in the Strong Vincent scrimmage Juranovich started as the MIKE, Yuran was the SAM and Hosey the WILL.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Todd Rearick added first team all-region punter to his list of accomplishments last year and Jordan Rearick takes his spot, while sophomore Jason Sypolt is back as the kicker with Brown, Spicer, Hosey and Bittler all possible return men.

OVERVIEW

Sharon lost a lot, but does return some very talented players and should be in the hunt for a fourth straight playoff berth.

Last year was the first time since 2005 that Oil City averaged more than 20 points per game and the 22.8 per contest that the Oilers put up was more than any other District 10 Class AA team that failed to qualify for the postseason. Most of the skill position players from last year’s offense are back, including junior classmates Logan Lantz (wide receiver) and Ben Koyack (tight end), who combined to catch 107 passes for 1599 yards and 18 touchdowns. Lantz led the team with 55 catches, which went for 799 yards and eight touchdowns, and during the final three weeks of the season he hauled in 32 passes 594 yards and six touchdowns. Koyack, who has been getting Division 1 attention, had 48 receptions and led the team in both receiving yards (800) and touchdown catches (10) and had 22 catches for 438 yards and seven scores during that same season-ending three game stretch, which saw the team go 2-1 and put up 42 points per contest. Junior Mark Kulinski, who completed 46 of 69 passes for 917 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions for the season, was the starting quarterback for all three of those games, while senior Stephen May began last season as the starter and led the team in attempts (189), completions (93) and passing yards (1,115) and threw six touchdowns passes and seven interceptions.  Those two entered camp in a battle to win the starting job and with just four days left before the season opener against Meadville, coach LaVerde had not named a starter, although he said that he would do so later in the week. Senior Cody Johnson (79 carries, 267 yards, three touchdowns) and junior Sam Heasley (47 carries, 194 yards, one touchdown – eight catches, 64 yards) give the team two experienced running backs, while senior Logan Carson and juniors Luke Klena, who rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown in the team’s season closing victory over Reynolds, Brett Heber and Tyler Fleeger are others that could start or see time. Junior Dallas Williams finished fourth on the team in catches (9) and receiving yards (112) and joins Lantz as a returning starter at wide receiver, while the Oilers will have two tight ends on the field in many situations with either Devin Forgey or Conner Taylor, both seniors, joining Koyack. Three multi-year starters from last year’s line graduated, including second team all-region guard Matt Schneider and seniors Brandon Xander and Andrew Angros and junior Blaise Rex are all options to be the starting guards this season. Xander could also start at center, with classmate Joe Hopwood being the other possible starter, while the top three tackles are juniors Nick Updegraff and Paul Mitchell and sophomore Mike Moon.

DEFENSE

RANK

Oil City’s defense has allowed more than 28 points per game each of last four years and if the team is to be a serious playoff contender that streak obviously can’t continue. The strength of this year’s defense could be linebacker as four players that recorded at least 25 tackles return, including Carson, who recorded at least 50 tackles both of past seasons (77, 3.5 sacks last year) and Johnson (72 tackles, one interception) who are the starting inside linebackers. Heasley (31 tackles, 3.5 sacks), Koyack (25 tackles, 2.5 sacks), Taylor (24 tackles), Klena and junior Alex Deloe will be in the rotation at outside linebacker, while Deloe and classmate Lucas McVay are the top two backups at inside linebacker. Lantz (41 tackles, two interceptions) and Heber, who could start at either corner or safety, give the secondary two experienced starters, while Fleeger could also start at safety or cornerback and Williams is a third option at corner. Defensive tackle Angros (38 tackles over the past two seasons) and defensive end Xander (35 tackles last year) are the two most experienced defensive linemen and others that figures to see time up front are tackles Hopwood, senior Steven Bradley and junior Matt Rankin and ends Moon, Forgey and Rex.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Klena returns as the kicker and Carson is the punter.

OVERVIEW

Led by Koyack, Oil City has a plethora of talented skill players on offense, but whether or not the team can make a run at a first postseason berth in more than a decade could depend on the play of the offensive line and the defense.

In its second year under head coach Frank Antuono Hickory’s offensive increased its point production by nearly a touchdown per game and a similar increase this season would likely put the team in prime position for a first postseason berth since 2005. If the offense does improve, senior Elrico Jones, who started at wide receiver for the Hornets both of the past two years (earning second team all-region honors in 2007) and will also see time at both quarterback and wingback this year, will likely be one of the main reasons. Junior Tyler Gargano takes over for, two-year starter, Ryan Voisey as the team’s starting quarterback, while seniors Sam Hosey (wingback) and Ryan Hayes (fullback) are returning starters in the backfield. Sophomore Andrew Smith will also start or significant time at wingback, while senior Jake Smith gives the team a second returning starter at receiver. There will be times when the Hornets don’t use a tight end, but when they do the top two candidates are juniors Garrett Trosch and Mike Grata. Two all-region selections from last year’s line, including first team tackle Zach Miramontes, graduated and while this year’s group is young, three juniors with starting experience do return and amongst that group are guards Reese Swatsworth and Ross Brennamen and tackle Nick Fustos, although Brenneman may miss some time due to injury. Sophomore Matt Bell is another option at guard, with Morgan Englebaugh, also a sophomore, the other tackle and either senior Joe Boulware or junior Dustin Orlick starting at center.

DEFENSE

29.1 points per game allowed last season

RANK

Amongst 8 teams in region: 7

Amongst 17 Class AA teams in District 10: 15

One of the main things that coach Antuono mentioned was that his team must improve on defense as 2008 was the third straight year that the Hornets allowed more than 20 points per game and the first time in more than a decade they that allowed more than four touchdowns per contest. First team linebacker Joey Manilla, a 2009 graduate, was the only all-region selection on last year’s defense and this year’s linebacker core includes outside starters Hayes and senior classmate Ken Howard, while Anton Fellner, also a senior, is one inside linebacker with either Grata or senior Brandon Smith the other. In the afore mentioned scrimmage against West Middlesex, in which Hickory held West Middlesex’s first team offense scoreless, Bell was one player that really stood out and joining him in the mix at defensive tackle are Orlick, Fustos, Boulware and senior Nick May, with Swatsworth, Brenneman, senior Akeem Fields and junior Scott Metze the top four defensive ends. Hosey returns as one cornerback with Jones the other corner and Jake Smith the free safety.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Special teams should be a strength for the Hornets as senior Sean Zippie is back for a third year as the team’s kicker, while Matt Durisko, also a senior, will handle punts for a second straight season and Hosey, who returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown against Grove City last year, Jones and Jake Smith are the top three return men.

OVERVIEW

Hickory closed 2008 by winning two of its final three games and gave district semifinalist Sharon all it wanted in the final game of the year and if the team can build on that and improve its defense, with a playmaker like Jones on offense, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see the team contend for its first postseason berth in four years.

Slippery Rock averaged more than 27 point per game in both of the past two regular seasons and 2008 was the first time since 2003, when the Rockets finished just one win shy of a state finals appearance, that the team put up more than 30 points per game. But, gone from the last year's offense are three all-region selections, including second team quarterback Jono Powell, who accounted for 4,274 yards of offense and 42 touchdowns over the past two seasons and both passed and rushed more than 1100 yards last year. Senior Ayron Gallagher, who rushed for over 200 yards both of the past two seasons as the team’s fullback, won the staring quarterback job in training camp and will be joined in the backfield by classmate Justin Angerett (134 carries, 657 yards, five touchdowns) and junior fullback Brandon Henry with sophomore Sean White and junior John McAvoy others that will see time. Angerett had two games with more than 100 yards rushing last season, including a 112-yard, one-touchdown performace in the Rockets district quarterfinal win against North East. Senior Kevin Rummell, who started on the offensive line the past two years, and junior Alec McDeavitt were others expected to see time at running back, but Rummell was injured in the team's first scrimmage and McDeavitt in the second and as of this article their status for return was undetermined. At wide receiver the Rockets must replace Derrick Orloski, who earned second team all-region honors both of the past two years and caught 43 passes for 662 yards and seven touchdowns last season, and senior Ryan Gordon, junior Cole Knight and sophomore Sam Furrh are team’s top three receivers this season, with senior A.J. Rensel the top tight end and fellow freshmen Alex Brydon and Forest Christmann others that could see time. Center Tony Papley was a first team all-region pick both of the past two years and senior Ty Pryor takes his spot with tackles Brent Ayers and Shayne Bruno and guard Brian McGonigle other seniors that will start on the line, and junior guard Shawn McGonigle, who is Brian McGonigle's younger brother, completing the unit.

During the 2008 regular season Slippery Rock allowed more points per game than any other District 10 Class AA playoff qualifier, but the defense acquitted itself rather nicely in the playoffs by giving up fewer than two touchdowns per contest and holding each of their three opponents at least 18 points below their season scoring average. Four all-region performers from last year’s group are no longer around, including first team safety Powell (51 tackles, three interceptions) and first team defensive tackle Papley (90 tackles, 5.5 sacks). The loss of Rummell might hurt the team more on defense as he finished last season with 76 tackles and would've been one of the starting outside linebackers, but those two spots will now be filled by Gallagher (72 tackles, two sacks, one interception) and senior classmate Nathan McDowell. Brian McGonigle is the middle linebacker, while Brydon also figures to see time and the defensive line includes tackles Ayers (36 tackles, 1.5 sacks) and Bruno and ends Pryor (17 tackles) and Henry. Isaac Osborne (52 tackles, four interceptions) joined Powell as an all-region safety (second team) and Angerett (30 tackles, three interceptions) makes the move from cornerback to fill one of the vacancies with Knight taking the other and Gordon, White and Furrh all expected to see time at the two cornerback positions.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Along with the losses on offense and defense, Slippery Rock must also replace first team all-region kicker Michael Ramirez and senior Dan Jeon and junior Cody Wolinski will share time in his spot and also split punting duties, while Angerett, White, Gordon Furrh and junior Andrew Waryanka could all see time returning kicks and/or punts.

OVERVIEW

While last year’s experience should help the returning players, if the Rockets are to contend for a third straight postseason berth they must replace eight all-regon players as well as Hall of Fame head coach Clyde Conti, who retired after last season.

Despite making the drop from Class AAA to AA, Titusville averaged nearly 17 points fewer per game than it did in 2007, although the Rockets did put up more than 21 points per contest for a third consecutive year. The 2008 drop off was pretty much expected as the team was made up of many new faces and this year’s team will also be inexperienced as only four starters are back and amongst the losses are two all-region picks. Guard Adam Schwab was the offenses only first team all-region selection as he earned the honor both of the past two years and is one of four starters from last year’s offensive line that must be replaced. Junior Cody Rodgers is the only starter that returns on the line and he's joined at guard by senior Kyle O'Neill with Tanner Evans, also a senior, and sophomore Van Stefaniszyn the tackles, and sophomore Charles Hall, also a sophomore, the center. Second team running back Johnathan Proano was the team’s other all-region pick as he rushed for 1209 yards and 11 touchdowns and surpassed 100 yards on the ground in seven games last season and seniors Zack Tarr and John Shoup and sophomore Cody Brunst will all see time in his place, while sophomore fullback Alex Kline is back and led all returning players in rushing (127 yards) and receiving (10 catches, 164 yards) last year. Cameron Atha, another 2009 graduate, caught 29 passes for 603 yards and eight touchdowns as the team’s starting split end the past two seasons and juniors Evan Tanner and Brian Hart and sophomore Drew Sneeringer will all see time at his old spot, with junior Hugh Wilken the new tight end. Senior James Pattison took over as the team’s starting quarterback midway through the 2008 season and threw for 411 yards and three touchdowns, but was also intercepted seven times.

Titusville’s defense was the key to the team capturing back-to-back Region 5 titles in 2006 and 2007 as it allowed just 8.7 points per game, including playoffs, in that time and posted nine shutouts. As was the case on offense, last year’s defense took more than a step backward by allowing nearly three touchdowns more per game than it did in 2007 and giving up at least 31 points in each of its six losses. Again like on offense, the Rocket defense must replace two all-region picks as inside linebacker Schwab (120 tackles, four sacks, one interception) and safety Sean Clark (59 tackles, one interception) were both second team selections. Even without Schwab, linebacker could be the strength of the defense as each of the team’s top three returning tacklers resides their with Kline (53 tackles) and Pattison (40 tackles) the outside starters and Tarr (47 tackles) one of the starting inside linebackers. Evans completes the group as the other inside linebacker, while the secondary includes cornerbacks Brunst and Hart and either Sneeringer or Tanner at safety. On the line Wilkens and Hall are the defensive ends and Rodgers is the nose tackle.

Senior Ryan Marsh, who is also a soccer player, is the kicker, Kline is the punter and the three return men are Hart, Shoup and freshman Jayce Corklin.

Titusville found the going tough in its first year in Region 3 and heading into this season the main goal that coach Salvo mentioned was to try and be more competitive.

OFFENSE

RANK

Amongst 17 Class AA teams in District 10: 17

Even back in 2005, when Reynolds captured the district title and got within one win of a state finals appearance the Raider offense was not a juggernaut as it averaged fewer than 20 points per game, but the last three seasons have been extremely tough as the team put up fewer than six points per contest in each. If the Raiders hope to improve on that, they will have to do so with a young and fairly inexperienced squad, although some starters do return, including senior fullback Greg Baptiste and junior tight end Brandon Weaver. Senior Dalton Farina led the team in rushing last year and will split time with sophomore Justin Rhodes at tailback, while junior Justin Wolfe won a training camp battle with freshman Clayton Stoyer for the starting quarterback job. Senior Jeremy Fowler began last season as the starting quarterback and is now one of the receivers, with junior John Gardill the other. Junior Rob McCullum is the only returning starter on the offensive line and moves from tackle to guard, while senior Charlie Murray, who split time at fullback with Baptiste last year, is the other guard with seniors Dan Totten and Claude Jones the tackles and sophomore Blake Heim the center.

DEFENSE

38.3 points per game allowed last season

RANK

Amongst 8 teams in region: 8

Amongst 17 Class AA teams in District 10: 17

As is the case on offense, the Reynolds defense has struggled mightily since 2005 as last year was the third straight that the team allowed more than 25 points per game. Five players that began last year as starters return, including linebackers Wolfe (outside) and Baptiste (inside), while Murray holds the other inside job and Rhodes is the other outside starter. Gardill (cornerback) and Fowler (safety) are returning starters in the secondary with Farina the other corner and the defensive line is made up of tackles McCullum, who also completes the list of returning starters on this side of the ball, and Heim and defensive ends Weaver and junior Jha'lil Harrison.

OVERVIEW

In his second year at the helm, Pacifico continues to try and improve the team and build it back to what it once was, although with a young inexperienced core the Raiders may again take their share of bumps in 2009.
